Unity Culture Club: On Your Radar – 21.1.16

Here is your weekly round-up of handpicked cross-cultural recommendations from the team at Unity.

Believe it or not, it has now been 40-years since punk landed in London. The definitive youth culture movement turned our lives upside down.

With just three chords, a DIY attitude, ripped jeans, and safety pins, the look and the style soon became the archetype of a true phenomenon. It provoked outrage, shock, and changed the world.

But punk music was about more than the music or the style. It represented an attitude and a spirit that is closely intertwined with London’s very own identity – and in 2016 we have the opportunity to get under its skin.

Punk.London is a year-long festival of events, gigs, exhibitions, performances and film that celebrates punk in all its forms. First up is Janette Beckman’s art show, followed by the Lost In Music show at the Print Space Gallery.

This new exhibition will examine perspectives from artists, psychologists, philosophers and neuroscientists to interrogate our understanding of the conscious experience.

Exploring phenomena such as somnambulism, synesthesia, and disorders of memory, the exhibition will examine ideas around the nature of consciousness, and in particular what can happen when our typical conscious experience is interrupted, damaged or undermined.

These challenging themes will be brought to life through a series of changing installations. The first one will be ‘The Whisper Heard’ by Imogen Stidworthy – focused on language and the brain.
