Unity Culture Club: On Your Radar – 23.10.15

Here’s your weekly co. mailer, featuring a host of handpicked recommendations from the left-field of London’s arts and culture world.

Lock down your aerials…

1. JAMIE XX’S POP-UP SHOP IN DALSTON

He’s a big favourite on the Unity Sonos, and he’s now upping the cool stakes even further with a pop-up shop in Dalston. Jamie xx recently opened the Good Times record shop on Kingsland Road and it’s well worth heading over to Kingsland Road to check it out.

The shop is stocked with his own records – some of which will be signed, a hand-picked selection of new music from the super-cool Kristina Records, and some of the records sampled on his new album, ‘In Colour’.

The Good Times store will also host a series of in-store DJ sets, which will be broadcast live on NTS Radio.

2. COMICS AND BEER: SOMETHING IS BREWING!

One of our favourite beers is launching a new brew with a difference – by running a special comic book workshop event.

Brooklyn Brewery is hosting its comic strip workshop – led by illustrator Khary Randolph – at the brilliant Drink Shop Do creative space.

It celebrates Brooklyn Brewery’s limited release beer, Defender IPA. And why comics? Well, Brooklyn Brewery has been the official beer of Comic Con for the past four years, always teaming to create a new superhero. And if you want to really geek out, London’s Comic Con is taking place at the Excel this weekend.

3. AFFORDABLE ARTS FAIR

The Affordable Art Fair returns to Battersea Park this weekend. It sees new galleries flying in from across the globe to exhibit alongside fair favourites, from traditional to trailblazing. The organisers promise visitors will find an artwork, at an affordable price.

There’s plenty of new creative talent on show too. The Fair’s Recent Graduates’ Exhibition features 2015′s most exciting new names, and the education programme promises to be popular too. This year’s education session is inspired by the body, movement, health and well-being and even capitalises on the adult colouring book trend with a series of special events.

4. NIGHTWATCHERS AT THE TOWER OF LONDON

We’ve been hugely impressed by the brilliantly inventive work of new theatre company Anagram. And their new show Nightwatchers looks like one to watch.

It promises a secret mission in the Tower of London after dark this Hallowe’en, and sees the audience stepping right into a shadowy and mysterious world of state surveillance. The audience becomes part of the investigating team in a richly immersive experience that takes place through the eery corridors of the Tower.

The storytelling moves from contemporary London to Elizabethan times as you explore a mission led by code-breakers, law enforcers and radical religious extremists – all against the backdrop of a London icon.

5. FRESH DRESSED – UNDERSTANDING STREETWEAR

Critically acclaimed streetwear documentary Fresh Dressed gets a special preview screening this weekend – essential for anyone who really wants to understand streetwear and the culture that surrounds it.

Executive produced by hip hop superstar Nas and featuring interviews with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Diddy and Pusha T, the documentary charts the meteoric rise of the relationship between hip hop and fashion. With humble beginnings on New York street corners, to influencing entire generations across the world, streetwear has come to define an era. Fresh Dressed chronicles the key events responsible for this shift.

A panel discussion will be held directly after the screening with leading speakers from the worlds of hip hop and fashion. And the ticket also includes entry to a special party at the super cool London Fields Brewery.
