Unity Culture Club: On Your Radar – 12.06.15

Here’s your weekly co. mailer, featuring a host of handpicked recommendations from the left-field of London’s arts and culture world.

Lock down your aerials…

We’re big fans of The Royal Court’s diverse and brave programming, so it’s great to read about a new series of summer shows at the Tachbrook Street Market in Pimlico.

Taking place every Thursday and Friday until the end of August, the theatre will be bringing theatre closer to local residents. Visitors will have access to the Pimlico Playground, enjoy new journeying audio plays from Royal Court writers and Espresso Plays all “made to order” by a resident writer.

Visitors to the stall will also have the opportunity to take part in a miniature scriptwriting workshops and a chain-written community plays. Great to see something so novel and unique at one of our great markets, looks like something that will invite interest and ignite real curiosity in local people.

As subscribers to the independent magazine service Stack, we pride ourselves on a deep knowledge of the independent publishing landscape. So it was great to be invited to next week’s launch of Pannier magazine.

The title is a beautifully designed cycle touring resource and community for traveling cyclists. If you’re looking for inspiration for a big adventure, then this is the place to look. The title is hosting a launch party at the Brooks store in Covent Garden.

And if you do love cycling, then you’re in luck because Unity is about to announce a big new cycling race coming to London for the first time..

Carten Höller: Decision is the artist’s largest survey show in the UK to date, and has just opened to visitors. The exhibition immerses visitors in a series of experimental environments, Höller’s interactive show explores perception and decision making. To enter the exhibition visitors must choose between two different entrances, behind which lie separate routes through the first gallery. Once inside the exhibition, visitors encounter a range of situations – including the invitation to consume a pill, contents unknown – that ask them to reflect on the process of decision making.

We love the brave vision behind this show. Over the past 20-years Holler has created devices, vehicles and situations that alter visitors’ physical and psychological states. Carsten Höller: Decision offers visitors the chance to see the world upside-down, experience uncanny bodily sensations and soar above London’s traffic in a flying machine. Hoping to ‘induce hallucinations, in the widest sense’ Höller populates the gallery with disorientating objects and installations, including giant revolving mushrooms and two robotically-engineered beds that – day and night – roam the exhibition like a pair of restless, insomniac twins. Most of all, it looks like fun too!

Love art, fashion, design, erotica and photography? Then we have great news, because the world’s leading luxury publisher Taschen is hosting a summer sale later this month.

Unity is delighted to be working with Taschen again, telling the story around the publisher’s much-anticipated summer sale. It features 50 to 75% discounts in all TASCHEN stores worldwide. That’s a minimum of half-price on titles spanning cutting-edge design, jaw-dropping photography and unearthed historical treasures.

The London store in Duke of York’s Square, Chelsea, will feature some of the very best bargains. And the publisher is launching the #TASCHENsalefie promotion on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The most “liked” photo using this hashtag will win a share of up to $10,000 worth of books.

We are hosting a private view with the Taschen team on Wednesday June 24th, so if you’re keen to come down and get a sneak peek of the titles set to feature in the sale then give the Unity team a call to get on our guestlist.

Autoplaying videos have proved a success and now Facebook are upping the ante by allowing animated GIFs onto newsfeeds.

Now a huge part of pop culture, Graphics Interchange Format files are a top-notch way of captivating audiences with stand-out visuals. Largely used on blog platforms like Tumblr and Twitter, GIFs are super-sharable as they add motion to static imagery.

This move by Facebook is great for personal accounts but if you’re a brand page, unfortunately this feature isn’t yet available however, the platform explains that it’s ‘exploring ways to enable this’.

In the meantime though, get your GIF on and post away! Need inspiration? Try giphy.com

Finally, Unity is proud to be working with the UK’s biggest graduate creativity showcase Free Range.

Taking place throughout this summer, Free Range Shows profile some of Britain’s most innovative and compelling up and coming artists and designers. Now in its fifteenth year, Free Range Shows has grown in prominence becoming a key diary feature for the creative industry to observe the works of the future creative elite. Each week a different discipline from fashion, design, photography, art, interior design and architecture is given its chance to shine within the walls of The Old Truman Brewery.

For many of the young artists involved it is the first opportunity to display their work outside of a university environment, with the exposure from Free Range Shows allowing them to move forward in their careers. Last year 100,000 people visited Free Range Shows to see the 3,000 exhibitors on show, from leading arts courses, such as Goldsmiths BA Design, University of the West of England BA Illustration and Bath School of Art BA Fine Art, as well as Interior Educators displaying the work of over 50 Interior Design and Architecture degree courses.

The Unity team went along to see the photography work earlier this week, and were blown-away by the scale of the ambition, quality of the work and bravery of the photographers showcasing their work. If you love scouting out the freshest new talent, then this is the place to be!
